Thriller Openings:
As class we analysed the different opening that a thriller film would have. We had researched the 2 main opening that thriller films use which are listed below:
These four were:
- Stylised
- Discrete
- Blank Screen
- Traditional
In the stylised film opening we watched the film 'Mezrine'. We saw that this opening uses really sharp editing skills and lots of different camera shots all hown to us at once. Throught the whole opening he titles are placed in different sides of the different images. As most of the screen is taken up by dfferent shots, there would be an unusual gap where the titles are placed. There is a lot of non-diagetic sound and the titles can also be shown over a blank screen.
In the discrete film opening we watched the film 'Arlington Road'. We saw that there are not many reference used that are related to the acctual film. The title sequece on Arlington Drive consist of a lot of flashing images and titles that appear over a blank screen. Also while there are flashing images there is non-diagetic music played. This showed that that a lot of editing has been taken place to make it seem interesting.
In the blank screen film opening we watched the film 'Dead Calm. This was the the most non-interesting opening of when we thought in our groups. Whilst non-diagetic sound is used, the main title of the film appears first then the credits. The oepning then whilst finished 'fades' into action.
In the traditional film opening we watched the film 'Panic Room'. We saw this is a film opening with titles shown throught the sequence. It begins with an establishing shot to show the audience where the film is based. Non-diagetic sound is used to create suspence. We also saw in this particular traditional opening that the font used relates almost to what is being shown in the background.
