Genre, Sub Genre + Audience

The blog I am writing now, is a blog talking about two films and their genres. At the start of the lesson, we had a brief discussion about what types of genres were around in cinema today. Some of these genres were: action, romance, comedy, horror and thrillers. The two films I am going to analyse are 'Harry Potter' and 'The Others'.

HARRY POTTER:

Firstly, Harry Potter's main genre would be classified as fantasy, along with a lot of sub genre's, such as: action, and young kids fantasy. Harry Potter has a very specific target audience, and that is the child and teenage years. However, it has attracted a large audience, with many adults going to see the brilliant film themselves. The key signifiers of this are seen in the photo above. The wand is a fantasy idea, which many kids will see as a great form of entertainment, and as Harry is very clearly holding a wand, the picture signifies it's specific target audience.

THE OTHERS:

Next, we can clearly see that The Others main genre is horror. A specific sub genre for this film could be action, as it involves lots of action leading up to all horror scenes. As well as that, the target audience for this film would be teenagers and adults. This is mainly because, the age rating for this film is a '12', which indicates some scary films, that young kids may find extremely scary. Finally, the key signifiers of the picture above are very clear. The picture is very dark, which can represent pain or death, and the woman looks extremely scared, which indicates that she doesn't feel safe.

Overall, we can see that both films are aimed at different target groups, and the two pictures represent this. It gives me a great idea for our own thriller, and lets me know that first impressions will be extremely important in our chances of success.
