Genre, Sub Genre and Audience
We were given a worksheet by Dan with a list of different movies with lots of different genres. These genres consisted of comedy, thriller, crime, action, drama, romance and many more. After being briefed we set of in our groups and all chose two different movies from the list given. I chose the movies Friends with Benefits and and Dream House. for these two movies i will critically analyse the target audience, genre and sub genres.
genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed.Subcategories Film genres often branch out into subgenres and include elements of other genres.Target audience is who the film is made for.
(1) Friends with benefits trailer (2011)
(1) You get the sense that the genre of Friends with benefits is a Romantic Comedy starring the likes of Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake targeted at young adults. Although being a PG 13 in america there is elements of sex. The Target Audience seems to be single students who all are open to the promiscuity of sex. The key signifiers of this is the characters used. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are both seen as good looking characters and the use of colours sets a nice and friendly mood as opposed to a thriller which would have very dark colours to set the tone
(2) Dream House (2011)
(2) You get the sense that the genre of Dream House is a drama and mystery. The film is targeted at adults who like to be kept guessing and interested in the characters and personalities. The Target Audience seems to be targeted at adults who like stories with a twist. The element of mystery keeps the reader guessing. Key signifiers that insinuate this are the dark colours, and the characters looks on their faces on the poster and trailer.
